From the Club Chairman’s Report to the Orwell Bulletin – March 2022
Orwell Football Club currently runs two teams in the Cambridgeshire FA pyramid, with the first team playing in the second tier and the reserves playing in the second. Both are having fantastic seasons, with the first team lying second in the league and the reserves at the top of their league. Both teams are also well placed in their respective cup competitions. The reserves have not lost a match in any league or cup competition for 18 matches !
This gives great pleasure to all those involved in running the club including our Secretary, Roger Golden, our Medic Paul (Spike) Squires who also does many other onerous jobs such as marking out the pitch and looking after club equipment, and our Treasurer Chris Randall who keeps a firm hand on the club’s finances. Jack Tidey and Tom McGlynn are our young managers and both have previously played for the club.
The biggest pity is that we cannot play our first team matches on our own recreation ground because it does not meet the Cambridge FA standards on pitch size. Due to the positioning of the Multi Use Games Area the football pitch is deemed not to be wide enough for the level at which our team plays. We therefore have become somewhat nomadic, currently playing our home games on Meldreth Recreation Ground, which is of course relatively costly.
We are delighted that most of our supporters have decamped to Meldreth, which has now become something of a fortress for us in terms of our ‘home’ results.
We have had some success in attracting local sponsorship for both teams, but are always happy to accept more !
In running the club we attract many young men and boys as players and add to the prestige of the village in sporting terms. Anyone who wishes to support the club during these exciting times will be made very welcome.
